Story
Bob was born on February 16, 1952, in Richland Center, Wisconsin, the son of Fred and Evelyn (Jackson) Beinborn. He married Rose Ann Loring on December 16, 1972. Bob worked at John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works from 1970-1988.
In 1970, he began coaching the “A” team boys’ basketball team at St. Rose. For 28 seasons, St. Rose became synonymous with basketball excellence, and Bob became synonymous with St. Rose. In 1986, Bob took on the role of freshman boys’ basketball coach at Cuba City High School—in addition to remaining the head coach of the St. Rose “A” team. In his first 16 years at the helm of the freshman squad. Bob led the Cubans to 13 regular season or tournament championships in the Dubuque (IA) Area Freshman League, including back-to-back unbeaten seasons in 1991-92 and 1992-93.
Bob retired from coaching St. Rose in 1998. But as was his fashion, he again added a second coaching duty—JV girls’ basketball coach at Cuba City High School. Bob continued to pull double duty with the freshman boys’ and JV girls’ basketball teams—often racing back from a boys’ game in time for the girls’ tip-off. In 1998, USA Today named Bob “Volunteer Coach of the Year” in Wisconsin for his countless hours helping youth of Cuba City.
In 2001, the University of Notre Dame recognized Bob as its “Man of the Year” in Dubuque. In 2004, Bob was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Bob served as the mayor of Cuba City from 2004-2011. He was a member of the Lions Club, St. Rose of Lima Parish Council and School Board, and the Cuba City Fire Department. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, golfing, and softball. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, son, friend, and coach.
Rabbi’s t-shirts were seen everywhere. Bob survived two serious bouts with cancer. The way he carried on through his struggle is a lesson to all in perseverance, courage, and humility. The positive influence that he has had on the future and people of Cuba City is truly heroic.
