The Washington Elementary Library, which also doubles as a classroom, a safe place for students with special needs, a staff meeting room, a resource for Kid’s Club and a community space, is long overdue for an update. Since the last renovation in 1989, genres in children’s literature have evolved rapidly, yet the library space has not. Right now, this means first-grade readers are sifting through books appropriate for fourth-graders and the high demand books students want to read are limited without space to grow. Though ADA compliant, the library is not easily accessible or inclusive of all of our students. A projector screen overlaps the picture book section, students under 36” are out of sight and the hand-me-down shelves are breaking beyond repair. Simply put, the WE Library has “made do” for a long time. Our kids deserve better.
With a handful of generous donations, including a major gift of $25,000 from Gary’s Foods, the campaign to raise $100,000 to renovate the WE Library is now in full swing!
Through creative use of library-specific flexible shelving and furniture, plans exist to increase book capacity, update carpet, plus add work stations, reading areas and inclusive seating to accommodate all students. Renovating this space means that WE students will be able to access age-appropriate books in a safe environment designed to meet the needs of everyone who uses it.
To ensure the space can be renovated for the 2024-2025 school year, funding must be secured by the end of this calendar year.
