4 Paws for Leonel
Start: Jan 7, 2019 - End: Oct 5, 2019
Our son Leonel has a rare & intractable form of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome. Leonel’s seizures are unpredictable and difficult to control. This means he requires constant supervision in case he has a seizure event. When seizures occur, they often have big physical & emotional impacts. Needless to say, Dravet Syndrome has a profound impact on Leonel, but also affects our entire family.
Early on in this journey we were determined to do everything we could to give Leonel & our entire family as normal a life as possible. So in 2017, we initiated the process to get a Seizure Assistance Dog from 4 Paws for Ability. Our primary goal is to give Leonel the freedom & independence to just be a kid, while keeping him safe when a seizure occurs. We also hope the dog will be a comfort in the aftermath of seizures, during medical procedures, and a friend who keeps Leonel company.
The expensive process and long wait for our seizure dog is almost over! In October of 2019, our family will travel to Xenia, Ohio. During the two week trip, we’ll meet our dog, learn how to properly handle him/her, and establish a bond that will serve as the foundation to the support the dog will bring to Leonel & our family.
