Have you ever been picked last for a sports team? Has someone made fun of you because you can’t keep the beat or you sound a little different? Well that never happens at Sparkles. We know that everyone wants to be included, and everyone wants to know they are an essential part of a team. We are that team.
The first high school Sparkles squad in our district, we are an all ability, all-inclusive spirit squad at Iowa City High. Our Team is made up of people with special needs and typical peers who care about inclusion and see the value in all students. All of our teammates bring their unique abilities and ideas to the team because we know we are stronger together.
We cheer at school games and community events and were invited to perform at the Goodwill Banquet in Spring 2019. In Fall 2019, we became independent of the varsity cheer squad, and have been raising funds to get uniforms, poms and bows.
In this time of uncertainty and distress, we want to raise school spirits while we raise funds, whether our fellow students, teachers and staff are onsite or online, we are #InThisTogether, and #ICCSDStrong and #TSTL. We are offering face masks on the One Mission site. We believe that their mission is in line with our mission; everyone can make a difference.
