Hospital Evangélico

Dear friends and family,

It is with both great excitement and [insert emotion for the feeling you get at the top of a rollercoaster] that I am writing to you. As most of you know (since it’s mostly all I talk about), when I am not at school, I work as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Since beginning on that adventure two years ago, I have realized that, more than health-science itself that excites me most, the relationships that I have had the opportunity to form with patients has truly been an experience of learning God’s purpose for me.

That said, for the month of January in 2020, I have the opportunity to travel to Siguatepeque, Honduras, to volunteer as a CNA at the Hospital Evangélico. Since being back at school I have only been reaffirmed in this opportunity as I deeply long for the chance to be working with patients again.

In preparing for this trip, I wanted to learn as much as I could about the hospital and the vision of those I would be joining. Here is their mission statement:

“The Evangelical Hospital is dedicated to God for the good of the Honduran people, with the hope that every person will find not only the health of the body, but also the salvation of the soul through faith in Jesus Christ.”

Reading this declaration of the intentions at Hospital Evangélico made me feel at home at once with these people that I have yet to meet. The best part of my job are the times when I feel God tugging at me and I get the opportunity to pray with and over patients, when I get to be the hand that holds theirs and remind them of a God who is greater than any physical circumstance.

I am so excited to share in the mission of the hospital as these relationships and prayers shared with patients that are the forefront of my motivation and purpose are directly shared with our brothers and sisters in Christ in Siguatepeque.

I’m struggling to find words to express the gratitude in my heart for the chance to go and love on these people; serving in this way is truly something I don’t deserve and is such a lesson to me in God’s grace to those who can’t even begin to comprehend its vastness.

As I prepare for this adventure through prayer and planning, I ask that you would partake in this journey alongside me. I will be traveling on my own, as this is a volunteer opportunity and not an “organized” missions trip. For way too long I struggled with the decision to go into an unfamiliar place by myself, where I don’t speak the language. The longer I prayed about it, I realized that I will not be going by myself or by my own power. I know who stands before me and beside me because:

“He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Cor. 12:9

In this I ask most of all for your prayer: that God would bless Hospital Evangélico and all those who are involved in their ministry, that they would truly live out their mission in treating both the spirit and body of His beloved. I ask also that you would pray for me, as the “planner/type A” personality in me says that this whole plan is crazy, that God’s spirit within me would overpower any doubts by reminding me continuously of the power at work within those who believe. Finally, I will be staying at the Seminary in Siguatepeque as it is the safest place for me to be on my own, this, in addition to the airfare, will be the bulk of my expenses for the trip. Please, first pray for guidance, but any financial support would be incredibly helpful on this journey.

Any form of support would be greatly appreciated, please write letters, I’d love to hear from you!
