Memorial Expense Fund for Mike Koepke

Michael Lee Koepke, 64, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2019, at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston, IA. The family will receive friends for an informal gathering from 2 – 4 pm on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at Felix and Oscars in Des Moines.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer a memorial contribution to cover his final expenses. Any additional funds will be donated to the MercyOne hospice house who cared for him with kindness in his final weeks. Please also share any thoughts, prayers and stories about Mike to bring comfort to his family.

Michael was born January 21, 1955, in Wichita, Kansas, to Henry and Evelyn (Gerst) Koepke. He grew up in and was a 1973 graduate of Eagle Grove.

Mike worked in concrete construction for many years owning his own business in the Des Moines area. During his years at Eagle Grove High School, he was an all-around athlete and held many records for wrestling and track. Later, he enjoyed participating in arm wrestling competitions. Mike was a muscle car aficionado restoring a 1969 Javelin and attending car shows with his kids. In his spare time, he enjoyed boating and water skiing, most weekends were spent on Saylorville with his family.

Mike is survived by his daughters, Kelly (Todd) McManus of North Liberty, IA, Holly (Scott) Long of Des Moines, IA; son, Lee (Jessica) Koepke of Mitchellville, IA; grandchildren, Lilly, Gabe, Drake, Brooklyn, Brody, Noah, Brittany; significant other, DeAnn Umphress; mother, Evelyn (Jack) West; sister, Cheryl Naylor; brother, Hank “Heine” (Cindy) Koepke Jr. of Goodyear, AZ; nephew, Sean Schrodt; niece, Ashley Koepke. He was preceded in death by his father and infant sister, Susan.

I have such good memories of Mike. All the trips between Iowa and Nebraska for holidays or family get togethers are some of them. He was the fun cousin. I so looked forward to seeing him at Pilger Days. May your hearts be filled with the wonderful memories of joyful times you had with him too. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. He is at peace now.
