My name is Annie Disselkoen and I am currently spending the next seven months in the south side of Chicago with an organization called Mission Year. Mission Year exists to show young people like myself what it means to really love God and love His people. In the city, they partner with various nonprofits that we volunteer at for the year while living in intentional and often times messy but beautiful community with each other. We go to church together, build relationships with our neighbors together and ultimately grow each other closer to the relational and loving heart of our Father.
Right now, I am serving at a nonprofit called Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly. They exist to reach out and build connection and friendship to elders over the age of 70 who are lonely or isolated due to loss of family or friends or just an extended distance from them. I currently have a case load of 20 elders who I visit twice a month. We go out to eat together, play games, share stories about our lives and more than often end up sharing about how Jesus has drawn near to us in our lives.
The elderly population is such a forgotten group of people desperately in need of love and friendship. They are all so wise and eager to share their lives and bits of their wisdom with young people like me. It’s such a moving and beautiful experience to be working with them.
Please consider supporting me while I learn about Jesus’s redemptive and healing power here in the South Side of Chicago and how all of His children are beloved and meaningful to Him.
