Reopening Vineyard School Rwanda
Start: Oct 18, 2020 - End: Nov 30, 2020
In March 0f 2020, The Vineyard School in Rwanda was forced to close due to COVID-19. For many of our students this has been a significant setback in their dreams of gaining an education. Our students live at the lowest levels of poverty in Rwanda. Without the development of the school by the Vineyard Church of Rwanda, and the forming of Bana Munsange Ministries in 2016, most of these children would not have an opportunity to attend school.
To have this dream of school be altered so greatly due to COVID-19 has been difficult on the children. While learning has continued distantly through the commitment and love of the teachers it has not been the same. For many of the students school was a key place of safety and stability surrounded by teachers and staff investing in and loving them.
When asked what they miss about school children said in this time they miss their school environment, classmates, teachers, and leaders. They miss studying in the class, singing songs, and the different activities at school.
As leaders we have been concerned about the mental, physical, spiritual, as well as emotional well-being of the students the longer they are away from the classroom environment. This is one of the many reasons for the push to reopen the school. We desire for them to be back with fellow students together growing into the truths of who they are made to be.
Due to COVID, reopening the school is much more difficult. There are many requirements laid out by the government that need to be met to resume classes. Among those requirements are:
- One additional classroom being built to accommodate all the children at safe distances
- A second block of toilets
- New tables and chairs so each child has their own instead of sharing
- Increased cleaning equipment
- Thermo scanner for testing
- Flyers and signs with safety precautions/protocols to be posted
- Increased hand sanitizer
- Extra masks for children without them.
Moving towards reopening the school in January is an expensive process totaling $14,000. We hope this fundraiser will help us move towards that goal and allow us to welcome the students back to their classes in January 2021 in the safest way possible. We cannot wait to once again hear the laughter and joy the students naturally radiate bouncing off those classroom walls.
