Smithsonian Comes to Mount Vernon!
Mount Vernon has been chosen to host the Smithsonian Institution’s exhibit Home Town Teams: How Sports Shape America in March and April of 2018.
The Mount Vernon exhibit will be managed by the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group (CDG) in partnership with the City of Mount Vernon and Cornell College, and will allow residents and visitors to explore the rich heritage of sport in Iowa and the nation. The budget to bring, implement and market this project to the regional eight-county Corridor area around Mount Vernon is estimated to be $24,683.00. Monies raised here will be coupled with grants, other fundraising projects, donations and gifts-in-kind.
This Smithsonian exhibit, featuring artifacts and stories from throughout sports history in America, will visit six different Iowa communities in 2018, traversing the state in nine months. Mount Vernon will be its first stop, and this will be the first time this particular exhibit has ever been in Iowa. Each host community provides complementary exhibits created and implemented by community members, featuring sport lore and glory from their own area. The CDG will be reaching out to sports organizations and schools throughout the eight-county area to take part in the exhibit.
The Smithsonian exhibit will allow visitors to put sports in the context of American culture and gain a better understanding of the role that sport plays in its interactions with families, schools, government, business, and other social institutions. Visitors will enjoy anecdotes, historical information, and memorabilia not available anywhere else. Sports are essential and significant activities in American society; they are remarkable for their impact on people and institutions, including the economy, mass media, education, political entities, and religious organizations. As a result of this pervasive sport and society interaction, an examination of the social world of sports affords community members the opportunity to gain insight into sensitive and often contentious issues such as racism, sexism, and classism.
The Mount Vernon/Lisbon Hometown Teams Exhibit will be open March 18 through April 29, 2018.
