Supporting Know Your Rights Camp
Start: Jun 23, 2020 - End: Jul 22, 2020
Hi. My name is Dallas Olberding and I live here in Mount Vernon, IA with my beautiful family of 6. When we are living covid free, I am super active in theatre around the community and also train here at Dance Arts Iowa in town. In this day and age, it can be easy to live your life in your own little bubble of comfort, almost secluded away from the rest of the world. But it is also not hard to notice the flashing headlines on TV… a movement. A band of millions protesting and demanding justice following the very disturbing murders of George Floyd.. Breonna Taylor.. Ahmuad Arbery… in fact, this uprising was really the effect of centuries full of indescribable oppression, discrimination, and black humans’ lives being taken left and right. And now, people are tired and fed up with the way black citizens in this country are treated as the result of systemic racism. So throughout all of this noise, you may be asking yourself frequently: What can I do? I ask myself that question every single day! Signing petitions, making phone calls, donating when you can and educating yourself are all such important and worthy ways to do your part for the movement. However, I still felt like I had to do more! So with a passion of art and design, I started thinking to myself how I could create something for not only my community but friends and family all over the place that could simply voice support for black lives. Something to represent and symbolize that black lives DO matter, and our work cannot stop until equality has been achieved. This is when I decided to team up with One Mission to put my ideas to use, and we came up with an outcome that I am SO excited to share with the world.
I ask you to please consider purchasing a shirt for you and others in your life as the money collected will be going towards an incredibly important and necessary non-profit organization, Know Your Rights Camp. KYRC was started by Colin Kaepernick (former NFL quarterback) who is recognized by many as the man who took a knee during the National Anthem before games to protest racial injustices in this country. His activism resulted in the founding of this very worthy organization whose mission is simply to advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities everywhere, one camp at a time. This country was not built for people of color, and today it almost feels like every little thing is still working against them, something I will never truly understand what that feels like… To know that you may never achieve your highest potential because of the color of your skin. To know that if a cop pulls you over, it may be the end. However I do understand that as a white person, my duty is to work with all my might fighting the system that never should have existed in the first place, and that is exactly what Know Your Rights Camp achieves. Through education, self-empowerment, mass-mobilization and the creation of new systems that elevate the next generation, this committee makes sure that participants know they are loved and they are worthy and they are going to accomplish beautiful things, that they know their rights. Paired with the camps, Know Your Rights Camp also has a legal defense initiative that is made up of top defense and civil rights lawyers to provide legal resources for those in need, addressing any and all injustices throughout communities. Helping individuals with legal assistance, arrests, or victims of police brutality, Know Your Rights Camp makes sure that nobody feels alone, ever.
My goal is to raise 500 dollars in the 30 day period this fund is open, so please consider doing your part and sharing with friends and family. Injustices happen every single day, and even though you may think it doesn’t affect you because it doesn’t happen in your community, think twice about that… oppression happens everywhere, and a lot of the time you’re not even aware of it! Now is the time to do something, and Know Your Rights Camp is the perfect gateway to finally changing this world like it so desperately needs because black lives cannot be silenced any longer… Black Lives Matter.
